Resources
SOLVE IT (www.solveitonline.co.uk) offers a range of general and targeted resources, which include:
- The Lifeskills workbook, which is a tool for those working with children and young people in a group setting or on an individual basis
- Age appropriate literature and posters for children and young people.
- Adult leaflets aimed at raising awareness of VSA
- Lesson plans for Primary and Secondary schools
- Professional VSA Information and Training Packs
- A one-hour presentation package for businesses, including Health and Safety obligations and specimen policy documents
Training
Specific VSA training is designed to provide an opportunity to develop understanding and an ability to respond to VSA related issues and the impact of its use on the individual, the family and the community, which covers Tier 1-2
In addition, it offers a DANOS-compliant four-week training module on VSA for professionals working with young people, which cover tiers 1-3. Subjects studied include:
- Issues in relation to young people and VSA
- The prevalence of VSA
- Products abused and methods of abuse
- The effects and consequences of VSA
- The signs and symptoms of abuse
- Possible reasons for abuse
- Knowledge of emergency action
- Legislation in relation to VSA
- Harm minimisation
- Where to access support
Following training the opportunity to shadow SOLVE IT staff within the community is provided.
Projects and services
Children And Young People: - SOLVE IT believes that every child and young person needs to gain knowledge of VSA at every stage of their development and that our programmes of awareness and education will help him or her to gain information to enable them to make informed choices about VSA. Children and young people are given developmentally appropriate information about VSA and that their views and opinions are listened to. All educational sessions include interactive learning techniques.
- SOLVE IT can offer awareness and education to children aged 10-11 and those 11+. Each age appropriate session is tailored in content to suit individual needs.
- Parents, Carers And Teachers There are several ways in which SOLVE IT engage parents and carers of the children and young people receiving VSA Awareness and Education. Parent, carers and teachers VSA awareness events, offered prior to input with children and young people will, dispel fears, create knowledge, enhance parent/child/teacher communication and encourage discussion around VSA issues.
- The Annual VSA Conference, which is intended for those working with young people and in the fields of drugs, health and justice.
- A workshop for retailers, which is usually undertaken in conjunction with Trading Standards.
- Specific presentations for statutory agencies such as the fire services, police, health workers and teachers.
Out-Reach
- Providing VSA targeted awareness, preventative and early intervention initiatives for those who do not access mainstream school or have been excluded. In addition, support and counselling can be offered to those abusing volatile substances.
Family Support Counsellors
The Family Support Counsellors can provide:
- Support and counselling to any or all members of a family who are affected by VSA
- Information and awareness about the dangers and consequences of VSA and how best to support the user.
Anyone requiring any of the above services are guaranteed to be seen within seven working days. Self or agency referrals by post, phone, e-mail or visit.
1stopshop aims to reduce the harm caused by VSA to the individual, their families and community by enabling those seeking help to access all the service they may require in one place.
The 1stopshop can provide the first contact with:
- SOLVE IT’s family support and counselling service for Volatile Substance users, especially young people, their families and communities, many of whom are particularly vulnerable.
- TIME 2 SOLVE IT, the UK’s 1st VSA Counselling and Drop In service for adults
- Education Co-ordinators for primary and secondary schools
- The Young Peoples Out-Reach services for those who are vulnerable or at risk
- Training facilitators
- The National Development Officers
- Support for professionals in relation to VSA
TIME 2 SOLVE IT
This project provides a dedicated, accessible, adult counselling, drop in, family, and support group service for VSA users, their families and communities, many of whom are particularly vulnerable. |
