DID YOU KNOW.
*VSA & DEATH
- VSA kills on average of one person every week in the UK.
- In 2006 in 40% of VSA deaths there was no evidence of previous abuse.
- 75% of deaths are due to the direct toxic effects of the product abused.
- VSA kills more children and young people aged 10-15 than all illegal drugs put together.
- 77% of abuse occurs in the home and 55% of deaths occur in the home.
- Butane lighter refills continued to claim the most lives - linked to 80% of all VSA deaths.
- 5 deaths were due to the non-medical use of Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas).
- 7 deaths were due to Helium – these figures are not included in the VSA Report.
- From 2000 - 2006 the average annual fatality rate was 55 – most were under 18.
- Between 2000 - 2006 VSA killed more young people aged 10 – 15 than all illegal drugs put together.
VSA & HEALTH
- VSA can damage all internal organs and the central nervous system.
- VSA is a powerful hallucinogenic which means that people can put themselves at risk and this may lead to tragic accidents.
- VSA can create a high in 15-30 seconds, leading quickly to a mind altering state.
VSA & CRIME
- The number of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders due to VSA is increasing.
- Crimes committed whilst high include ‑ murders, rapes, assaults, thefts and vandalism.
- The majority of drug users have admitted that VSA was a “Stepping Stone” to illegal drugs.
VSA & ADULTS
- Adult use of volatile substances in a crisis, can often be linked to childhood experimentation
- Volatile substances are used as a substitute and or coping strategy when illegal drugs are not available.
VSA FACTS
- The youngest person to die from VSA was a 7 year old – the oldest 80 years old.
- The average home contains over 50 products that can be abused.
- There is no such thing as a typical sniffer:- Any social, cultural and ethnic background.
- VSA does not show up in any non-invasive drug testing
